Crypto cannot be linked to me

The claimCryptocurrency cannot be linked back to a person
Not true It links at the edges, where it stops being cryptocurrency.

The mistake in the framing

The claim treats the chain as the whole system. It is one segment of a longer path that starts with ordinary money in an ordinary account and ends the same way. The chain segment may be well protected. The segments on either side of it are conventional financial records held by companies whose business includes keeping them.

So the question is never whether the chain can be read. It is whether the path can be joined up, and joining it up rarely requires reading the chain at all.

Where the links are

PointWhat exists there
Buying the coinAn account in a name, an identity check, a payment method, an amount and a timestamp. The strongest link in the path and the most ordinary.
The bank behind itA conventional record one step further back.
Withdrawal timingA movement out at a knowable moment for a knowable amount.
Deposit timingA movement in shortly afterwards. The correlation is the link, and no cryptography touches it.
Custodial servicesAny wallet or service somebody else controls holds records regardless of which coin it handles.
Your own deviceWallet files, browser history, saved addresses. Nothing on the chain, and it is where a concrete investigation usually starts.
Count the rowsFive of six rows have nothing to do with the blockchain. That is the honest shape of the problem and it is why chain level privacy is necessary and not close to sufficient.

Why the claim persists

Because the interesting part of the technology genuinely is strong, and the boring parts are where the exposure is. People repeat the part that is satisfying to explain and skip the part that sounds like admin. The predictable result is somebody with excellent chain privacy wrapped in an obvious trail on both sides.

What this page is not saying

It is not offering ways around any of it, and this site does not cover that anywhere. The point is narrower and worth stating plainly: an honest picture of where the records are is better than a confident one that is wrong, because people size their decisions against what they believe. Somebody who thinks the whole path is invisible takes risks they would not take if they could see it.
